Allons Québec!

B and I are getting ready for a road trip this week. We had planned to go up to Cape Breton for a few days to check out the other half of this province, but plans suddenly changed; we’re now heading to Quebec City- woo-hoo! But before we head off, I thought I would post a few recent photos to tide you over until I can bombard you with photos of Vieux Québec:

Our young friend Sophie turned 4, and we attended her and her sister Sunna’s joint birthday party which was held at a beautiful remote cabin on a lake, where we ate cream puffs and cupcakes, and listened to a beautiful story with the autumnally-attired Special Friend. It was a lovely day. (And Sunna is now 2!)

I decided to try my hand at knitting, so I watched some how-to videos on YouTube, and bought a pattern from a designer on Etsy…

…and violà. I’m really happy with it!

This is my second knitting project, a basket-weave scarf. I don’t have a pattern, I just studied a scarf I found on Etsy and decided to wing it. (Thanks to my cousin MaryAnn, I now refer to knitting as “channeling Auntie Mieke”.)

Yesterday our neighbour Kim brought us this stunning little bouquet. She had been out West since March, so we’re really happy to have her back, not just because she brings us flowers, but because she’s the best neighbour ever. Welcome home, Kim!

Baby naming, art, a so-called hurricane, and an anniversary

Our friends Derick & Sarah’s oldest, Eve, in an oak tree.

Our friends Jai & Lauren held a baby-naming ceremony for their 3-month old son, Griffin. We gathered under their oak tree, heard a traditional blessing, raised our glasses in a toast to baby-G, and then passed him around for formal introductions. B and I were acknowledged as Griffin’s ‘guide-parents’ (get it? I love that), and we felt really proud and honoured. Wish one of us had thought to capture each other on film when we got our turns with Griffin! I did get these shots of G with Sarah, Derick, and Erin:

Paint the Town came later than usual this year, and ran straight into Hurricane Bill. It wasn’t much of a storm, though it did keep a few artists and art collectors from coming out. We had a great time as always, wandering around town watching the artists work. Though we tried (and we really, really, tried), we didn’t end up winning any of the big pieces we bid on. I got a tiny, folk-art painting of houses by a young artist that I really love (for a bargain $10!), but I lost out on several treasures, one by my friend Katie. This is Katie, who got sunburned during a hurricane, standing next to her art on day one, plus a couple other Paint the Town shots:

A view of Hurricane Bill (I should write it as Hurricane Bill, or more accurately, Downgraded Tropical Storm Bill) from the Annapolis boardwalk, looking towards Digby:

This is just a nice shot, taken a few minutes later, of a boat at the wharf, with Granville Ferry in the background:

August 27th marked the fifth anniversary of B and I packing ourselves and the critters into the car and setting off from New Westminster to our new home in Nova Scotia. To celebrate, we had a bbq at our place the next evening, with homemade burgers, tonnes of fixins, and a keg of beer from the micro-brewery in Port Williams. Then we sat around the fire-pit with some of the best friends either of us have ever made and ate s’mores and watched stars and bundled ourselves up in blankets. (It was cold!) We had a lot of fun, and between the fun and the work, we were too busy to find the camera to capture it all for posterity. I need to work on that problem. I did capture the grill (with B relaxing in the background), the keg, and the food table pre-party, so at least there’s that.

The next day I found marbles in the yard, a sign that it was a great party.

And the following Monday I found a lovely present leaning on my door stoop. It was an anniversary gift from Katie: a diptych drawing of rooftops, in the same vein as the piece of hers that I was bidding on but lost. Woooooo! I haven’t figured out where to hang them yet, but it usually takes me a month or two to work out new art placement. For now they sit on my office shelves where I can admire them while I work and while I write. Like right now. Go here to her website to admire more of her work.
