Seems summer arrived just in time for August. All that June and July rain turned my garden tropical, and there’s really no recovering from it now. I take a Darwinian approach to gardening: whatever won’t survive doesn’t deserve my time and attention. And whatever grows and spreads with determined ferocity has to be respected. It doesn’t always make for a pretty garden, but those are the laws. Plus, it’s too hot and buggy to do any serious gardening work now.

sweetpea1

I planted sweet peas in the spring, as I’ve done for the previous four years, but this year I finally got some blooms. I planted them in the front border without any support, with the idea that they could tumble over the rock wall, which they have done. Victory.

gelatomix

Because I was really missing my evening Grom gelato from our time in NYC, B kindly bought me an ice cream maker. This is the pistachio gelato mixture that took me almost 2 hours to make (1 hour was spent shelling pistachios).

gelato

This is the end product. Not quite as creamy as Grom’s, but really, really delicious in it’s own right.

krugbefore

I’ve been trying to tackle one item per day from our long to-do list of small house repairs and projects. This is one of them: recovering the two vintage Krug office chairs for B’s office. We bought the fabric last October once the office renovation was complete, but I only just got around to actually using it. You can see this one was Rooster’s favourite cat scratching post.

krugafter

Here it is, recovered and as good as new.

firetruck

I went into town for the Natal Day parade and wound up sitting with my friend Sophie at the judge’s table. It was a choice location, as we were given bribes of candy and pretzels.

float

This was my favourite float. It was hot out, so these young’uns deserve a medal for walking in those woolly outfits.

tractor

Lots of tractors, all Massey Harris, and this was my favourite entry.

hhfloat

The hardware store float had a Grease theme and that’s our pal David in a black mullet wig as Danny Zuko. Awesomeness.

sleepycat

Rooster’s sleeping spot, next to my left arm while I work, everyday.

furbelly

Fuzz-guts!

That’s all the pictures and news for now. The rest of our time has been spent in the usual summer-in-Nova-Scotia way: lolling in the hammock, going to farmer’s markets, eating too many cherries, looking at the ocean, visiting friends. Hope you’re enjoying your own summer paradise, wherever it may be!
